The Project:
Dent & Nordaus were commissioned to design a completely remodeled sanctuary within the envelope of the original 1970's synagogue to address major problems in aesthetics, functionality, lighting, and accessibility. the bima (altar) was rebuilt with a new, stone veneer back wall, broader stairs, and ramp. Custom-made lighting arcs (50' and 80' long, respectively) were designed by Dent & Nordhaus to dramatically improve the quality of light for the audience. All other lighting was redesigned and replaced. Special components designed by Dent & Nordhaus included the Ark, the eternal light, the fabric for the seating, and the carpeting. B'nai Israel received an International Illumination Design Award in 2001 from the International Association of Lighting Designers.
