The Project

The design of this 3600 sf residence in the eastern foothills of Albuquerque addressed two conflicting goals: energy efficiency and the capture of panoramic city views to the west. Additionally, the house was required to be fully handicapped accessible while fitting on a steeply sloping site. The design solution placed the garage, service area, and large workshop nestled into the hillside on the ground floor with the living areas above and oriented to solar gain and city views. The floors are connected by a centrally located elevator and stair that separates the sleeping and studio areas from the living, dining, and kitchen spaces on the upper floor.
